Capability Building Programme
We seek to nurture social transformation and ensure the succession of coming generations of first-class Māori researchers. Achieving this goal means building Māori research capability in the face of serious under-representation in advanced tertiary education and a historic lack of engagement by Māori communities in research and development.
Hence our focus has been predominately on increasing student numbers participating and supporting the completion of higher qualifications. Now we are concerned with and focused on building specific capabilities that can contribute to our research plan and strategic direction.
When we were founded in 2002, we identified a key need in bridging transitions through the various levels from pre-doctoral through doctoral, post-doctoral and beyond to research leadership. To meet this we established a coordinated curriculum through Te Kupenga o MAI programme and through other specialist courses.
The programme for Capability Building includes:
- Doctoral support and mentoring through Te Kupenga o MAI
- Doctoral conferences and symposia
- Specialist training workshops
- A grants and fellowships programme to support from pre-doctoral to post-doctoral levels
- Wānanga mentoring and support.
