Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga's (NPM) 2016 Pūrongo Ā-Tau Annual Report was presented at NPM's Hui-ā-Tau (Annual General Meeting) in Wellington on May 25, 2017. This document highlights our performance and activities for the first year of our new Centre of Research Excellence (CoRE) contract, engaging a renewed and collectivised network of 21 partners in an evolved NPM, with a distributed leadership and a new research leadership team.

15 Foundational Research Projects led by outstanding Māori researchers from across the country began in 2016, as well as 10 new Seed and Scope projects, and through these projects we engaged with an ever widening network both nationally and internationally.

Over 300 outputs were produced and delivered from NPM research and researchers, including peer-reviewed research articles, books and book chapters, research reports and media, conference seminars, papers and presentations.

Our online audience continued to expand and we shared our knowledge far and wide, engaging at a deeper level with local communities and providing resources for a wide array of early and mid-career Māori researchers and senior investigators.

Our transition into a renewed and collectivised network of Māori researchers and communities was celebrated at the end of the year when we successfully hosted the 7th Biennial International Indigenous Research Conference, with over 500 participants visiting us here in Tāmaki Makaurau.

A considerable amount of work was completed by everyone in order for us to transition to our new CoRE contract successfully, as well as develop new projects, programmes and partnerships - and this 2016 Annual Report is once again an acknowledgment of the dedication and commitment of both our staff and research network, to ensure that Māori continue to lead New Zealand into the future.
