Doctoral Thesis
Project commenced:Kahutoi Mere Te Kanawa (Ngāti Kinohaku, Maniapoto, Waikato, Tuwharetoa me Rarua oku iwi),
My application for this scholarship is to help me complete my Creative Practice Doctorate, which I have now been working on for a number of years.
I see the doctorate as a segue into understanding more about our own Māori knowledge and practices in the field of our textile practices. We have been fortunate to still have, view and come to understand more about our ways of knowing and being imbued in the very fabric of our natural materials and how they are processed.
This type of knowledge will enliven the depth of Mātauranga especially in rāranga, whatu and tukutuku that are visual narratives of our past. We must begin to understand the mātauranga and applied practices that have been passed down through the generations.
I would like to contribute this knowledge to the next generations so that they to will understand the depth of our ancestors and what they have left, in particular the kaikaranga of our past.
