This project served as an introduction to the ongoing study Honourable Kāwanatanga: A Prerequisite for Constitutional Transformation. The overall study was designed to answer the following key questions:
1. What is honourable kāwanatanga?
2. How can third sector (and other) organisations strengthen and deepen their engagement with Te Tiriti?
This internship applied the Mauri Model Decision Making Framework to assess the impacts of fracking on an Indigenous reservation in Alberta, Canada—highlighting environmental, cultural, and social consequences. The findings offer valuable insights for future oil and gas decisions in Aotearoa.
Associate Professor Paul Kayes, Kia Maia Ellis and James (Hemi) O’Callaghan will discuss the Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga research project they are leading - “An investigation into the fisheries resources and interests of iwi, hapū and marae within Tauranga Moana and the impacts caused by the grounding of the CV Rena”.
In 2014, the Te Urewera National Park in New Zealand became recognised as a legal person under the law. In 2017, New Zealand did it again, declaring the Whanganui River as a legal entity. Law professor Jacinta Ruru considers the implications of these historic events in this warm and informative talk.
